SYNOPSIS VIA GOODREADS:
An orphan by the age of sixteen, Sophia Morganthal now lives with her best friend and struggles in a world with no relatives. Midway through her Senior year, Sophia finds herself flying across the country to live with a family she never knew existed. She ends up with more questions than answers when she discovers that not only does she come from a long line of witches but that she must be initiated within the year to prevent a battle for coven leadership.

Feeling more alone than ever, Sophia finds her solace in books. The journals of past initiates provide her with more than she ever wanted to know and make her question the path she’s on. Amidst all of the upheaval in her life, Sophia also finds one source of happiness – Connor. The last thing she needs is more complications, but Connor is the only person who makes her feel wanted for herself and not for what she stands for.

As Sophia learns more about herself, and what being initiated into Blackthorne coven really means, she must answer the ultimate question – would she give up everything for her family?

EXCERPT

After watching Alexa blow up a precious stone, I was a little hesitant to try. She watched me, her foot tapping the floor repeatedly, until I picked out a pretty blue gemstone that matched my shirt. I held it in my right hand, placing my left hand over it just as Alexa had done. Here is where I thought my previous failed attempts would come in handy since I already knew what didn’t work. But it didn’t matter much after all. My magic, perhaps knowing it was about to be used for the first time, was waiting as impatient as a child kept inside on a rainy day. Unlike those previous attempts, I was finally able to find it, grasp a tendril and tug lightly. It, whatever it was, unspooled and began to move towards my hands. I looked up at Alexa, panic building in my chest, heart beating erratically as this energy moved through my body. It began to pool in my hands, where I should have been able to send it into the stone, but somehow it was blocked. My heart continued to race, getting faster and faster as the energy filled my hands. The pressure built until I was sure my hands would burst, when Alexa placed a hand on my wrist.

“Relax,” she said. “Let it flow.”

Something snapped in my brain, a mental block I had thrown up against magic being real, and finally, my power began to pour into the sapphire. It wasn’t long before I felt some resistance from the stone, as the energy flow slowed. I pulled back, somehow instinctively knowing how and my connection to the stone broke. In my hands, I held my very own power stone. Opening my hand, the gem sat on my palm, pulsing along with my heartbeat. I barked out a laugh, staring at the stone, then raised my head to look at Alexa.
It was real. It was all real. Everything they told me. I shook my head, still staring at the stone in my hand. The magic energy had retreated back into my body, but I could feel it pulsing inside my chest, refusing to be hidden again, at one time both foreign and completely natural.

Her imaginary friends had friends… and family… and even little cities to play in. As she grew older, she began to put some of these stories down on paper, rather than keeping them in her head. Writing a novel had always been a dream for her, perhaps an item on her bucket list, but it wasn’t until she joined a writing group with other aspiring writers that she finally got to work. When not writing, Kat is reading or driving her son to and from practices and wishing she was reading. It depends on the day.
Kat still lives in the suburbs of Chicago with her wonderful husband, their hilarious son and their sometimes adorable and sometimes annoying cat, Ozzie.

Soul of Fire

Soul of Fire

Caris McRae

Soul of Fire (Chronicles of Quiliaris I)

Ever read a story that you just click with?

You know what I mean? You cannot put it down, and you are left with wanting more?

This is how Soul of Fire was for me. Caris is a brand new author with a bright future…at least I think so.

Let me start with a disclaimer: She is re-editing the book, though it is available for purchase now. However, there are a few editing issues, and I know that drives some people nuts.

However, I didn’t find them all that distracting from the story, and so I am going to recommend this as a great read!

Sheba…poor Sheba. She is neglected and forgotten about, and has been since birth.

She’s a twin, she has a brother, her parents, Royalty, are murdered by a disgusting excuse for a man, and she is hated and abused at her uncle’s.

In comes her other uncle, a Hashisin who recognizes her power, and her neglect. He rescues her and takes her along with him as he travels Quiliaris.

Y’all know how much I love a strong heroine, and Sheba (or Shea, as she is called in the book) is definitely one bad ass heroine.

Her powers alone are awesome, but her character…her character is my favorite thing about her.

Despite the abuse and neglect, she is compassionate. Her trust has been betrayed by every single person she thought loved her by the end of the book, and still she shows compassion.

She’s also clever, and doesn’t put up with crap from anyone.

This book follows her journey as she grows into her own. It’s full of adventure, douche-y princes, not so douche-y princes, battle, magic, god’s meddling in human affairs.

Really, it has it all and you won’t be left disappointed in the least!

Go buy it, read it, and then…AND THEN!!! Review it! Please! Reviews are VITAL to our favorite Indie authors!

Oops! Before I forget, there is also a novella: Emerald Fire, It has some background to the Sheba’s Uncle!

Check out the Rafflecopter and enter the giveaway for this book! It goes until Thursday night!

Gathering Water & Giveaway Winner!

Gathering Water

Has anyone read this FAN-FREAKING-TASTIC book? If you haven’t you should go get it right now!

I’ll wait, you can click here and it’ll take you right to it.

Alright! First, I just want to give a shout out to Stormy Smith and Regan Claire, they are AH-MAZING (I refuse to use the word amaze-balls…I just don’t get it, but they are that too)!!!!!!! They have both been instrumental in helping me make this blog successful. Y’all, they are amazing, and have made me feel like not just a street team member (yeah, I know you are jealous), but part of a community that supports and grows together.

Just gives me warm fuzzies all over.

Alright! ENOUGH MUSHY STUFF! Let’s get right to the interview with Dove and Cash from Gathering Water shall we? It was such a blast, and the friendship these two have is just so amazing.

*WARNING*

Do not eat or drink anything prior to reading this interview, and probably you might need to go pee first too. They are that funny (at least I think so)!

Alright Dove and Cash, I am so SO excited to have you both here to chat with! I know y’all have been friends for a long time, I bet you have some good dirt on each other, care to share?

Cash: Dirt? No dirt. Nothing to share…

Dove: That’s a lie.

Cash: Of course it’s a lie, but some secrets are sacred. I guess we can tell her how we became friends. It was second grade and we were in the same class. One day at recess I was racing some of the other kids and winning by a long shot–

Dove: Because you were cheating by using your abilities.

Cash: I didn’t have good control of my abilities back then, and would use them by accident when things got emotional!

Dove: And Cash got emotional a lot. Anyway, he lost control of his speed and tripped, breaking his wrist in the fall. One of the other kids had run to get our teacher, and I’d just learned about joint breaks from my dad, so I figured I could help out before the grownup got there.

Cash: Well, he definitely healed my wrist, but the doofus used too much of his own energy to do it, and by the time the teacher got back, I was fine but Dove was passed out on the grass. When he came back to school the next day, I told him that I knew what he’d done for me, and he told me he knew why I always won in footraces, and a friendship was formed.

*laughing* Oh my gosh, you both are too much! Let’s talk a bit about Della. It must have been quite the shock learning she even existed, let alone had shown up to claim your grandma’s house. Was she anything like you expected?

Cash: Considering I went into my grandma’s house that day expecting to evict a squatter, and ended up being rammed in the nads by a before unknown cousin, I’d say “shock” was an understatement. Really, it was pretty cool finding out about her. Dad was really starting to crack down on me, because of the whole responsibility to mankind thing we have as leaders in the war. I would have been representing both families by myself, where we’d always had two leaders before, so not having that hanging over my shoulders is awesome. Della, well, she’s so closed off half the time, you don’t really know what to expect. I know that Aunt Gabby was so full of life, I even remember her a little; mostly just her laugh when she used to take me for ice-cream. Mom said that she used to draw people to her, like a moth to flame. Della doesn’t realize it, but I think she has that same quality. The more she opens up, the brighter she seems to get.

Dove: Actually, that’s really accurate. Her aura literally gets brighter whenever she actually relaxes and lets loose, it’s fascinating.

Every time I picture that scene I crack up *stops giggling and clears throat* sorry Cash, I am sure that was pretty painful. Cash, her powers are pretty cool, are you even a little bit jealous of how deep her Well is?

Cash: I mean, I guess. But we all have our own strengths, you know? Really, I’m more jealous by her Shielding abilities than how much her Well can hold. I can’t Shield worth crap, and there she is, naturally Shielding her entire life. Just, er, don’t tell her I said that.

Yeah, her shielding abilities are pretty amazing. Which brings us to why she has had to develop such a strong shield. Both of you were present (unbeknownst to Della) when she had that panic attack in her room. I cannot imagine how horrifying her past has been, what has it been like for both of you when you get these glimpses into her past?

Dove: It was a total shock to me. I figured that her childhood wasn’t full of happy memories, but I had no idea the extent. She keeps everything so hidden, I’m still surprised she opened up that much. I felt pretty terrible about it, but it explained so much.

Cash: I knew she had some serious baggage from her past. Her Shielding is proof of that; you don’t create a literal defense mechanism that strong just for the hell of it. But it sucks that it was that bad. I still haven’t told dad, because I’m afraid he’d go out to California and kill every single one of her foster parents for letting something like that happen. It really floored me at first how she would say something devastating as if it were the most natural thing in the world, like having no family, and it’s clear that she’s never had anyone else to rely on or trust.

It’s so great that she has been able to discover what it’s like to have someone to trust, family and friends to rely on. I have really enjoyed that part of her journey. Dove, you are almost always present when Della has a breakdown, what is that like for you?

Cash: Yeah, Dove. Why are you always making my cousin cry?

Dove: Hey, it’s not my fault! I just have good timing. Or bad timing. Or something.

Cash: Yeah, Dove is like the crying-girl whisperer.

Dove: Well, I’ve had a ton of practice comforting the trail of tears that follows you around.

Cash: I can’t help that girls find me irresistible.

Dove: Yeah, you little heartbreaker. Anyway, It’s really humbling to see such a powerful person lose themselves in their emotion like that. She holds herself up so firmly all the time, I think that it’s getting to be too much with all that’s been happening. I’m just glad she lets me be there for her, and hope I’m never the reason she breaks down like that.

Wow…that is just…sooo…..*sigh*…ahem…Dove, it took you FOREVER to finally ask her out! Tell me, what is your favorite thing about her?

Dove: *laughs * Seriously? I don’t know. I guess those moments when she’s not guarding herself. It’s always with something so small, like when we go outside and she automatically raises her face to the sun and absorbs the warmth. It’s how she is affected by nature, I guess. Most people take it for granted, but the only time I see her really relaxed is when she’s surrounded by it.

Cash: Because she’s surrounded by her elements, dude, and elements equal power for her.

Dove: Naw, it’s different, Cash. You can’t see it. I can see Nature, and I can see how it affects her… and how she affects it. It’s like she is life. And life is beautiful…

Cash: I’m going to go throw up now.

 *hands Cash a trashcan*

Sorry, Cash, but I just have to ask Dove some more questions about him and Della. I am just dying to know, was there a specific moment you knew you wanted to date her?

Cash: Do I actually have to be here for this?

Dove: Shut your trap. I don’t know what I’m supposed to say here. Of course, I was interested as soon as I saw her. But the first time I saw her she was at the beach in a bathing suit and she’s h–

Cash: I will literally kill you if you finish that sentence.

Dove: Hah. Well, despite the fact that I found her… ahem, attractive, she was Cash’s cousin, so strictly friend-zone at first. We’d been hanging for a while, the three of us, and one day after helping out at the house she grabbed my arm when I was going to leave. It was the first time she touched me, at all. She’s really careful about that, and I hadn’t realized it until that moment. And that made me realize that I liked her touching me. After the night I healed her, and I found out why she was so resistant, the idea was pretty firmly rooted that I wanted to be more than friends.

Cash, how do you feel about their pending date?

Cash: I’m all ‘whatever’ about it.

Dove: Well, you did sucker punch me in the face when you found out.

Cash: Of course I did. You deserved it, too. But it’s all good, now. I mean, I’ll definitely kill him if he hurts her and all that jazz.

Dove: You could try. I seem to remember breaking your nose that night.

Cash: Well, so-rry I don’t have magical healing abilities that help me cheat in a fair fight.

Dove: sucker-punching is, by definition, not fighting fair. Besides, I healed you too after you calmed down.

Cash: And then we toasted to our health by sharing a couple brewskies. I don’t wanna see them playing tonsil hockey or anything, but other than that I’m okay with it.

Okay, let’s change the subject. Della’s description of the base where y’all met the Elfennol was amazing. Cash, what was your impression of the base?

Cash: Man, it was awesome! I’ve basically been waiting for that day my entire life. Dad had told me about it probably a million times when I was a kid, but nothing could have prepared me for it. We were in a cave in the ocean, a gigantic cave at that, but I would have had a hard time telling you we weren’t at the surface and under the sunshine. There was so much green, and pretty much anything that wasn’t made out of stone was made out of vines or ivy or moss or something naturish like that. Oh, and the actual stonework! Let me tell you, to look at them you’d never think any Elfennol had an ounce of artistic talent. They’re too… stiff to be artists, or that’s what I thought. Going there, and being surrounded by things they created definitely proved me wrong. I guess still waters run deep, or something.

Anything else you would like to share with my readers?

Cash: Only that the next installment in our journey will go down in November. Shiz will really hit the fan!

Well, boys it has been fun! Thanks for chatting! Can’t wait to see what you are up to in November!

THE WINNER IS……

Bound By Duty

Hey y’all! I am here with Amelia, the main character of a FANTASTIC new book, Bound By Duty, by a great new author Stormy Smith! If you haven’t bought the book I encourage you to do it!

Magic, a southern belle of a best friend, two amazing…make that THREE amazing guys, and a whole lot of action! What’s not to love!?!?! Let’s begin, shall we?

Amelia, thanks so much for joining me! Let’s start with an easy question: What are your favorite left-overs?

Lasagna – especially from Mariano’s. I swear it’s better the second time.

Ohhhh, that sounds yummy! My personal favorite is leftover Chinese food…any Chinese food, but especially lo mein.

So, I noticed you have a great sense of style, who did you get that from?

Mostly my best friend, Bethany. I was kind of a train wreck in that department before we met. I tried to follow trends and they just didn’t work with who I was. B encouraged me to just wear what I wanted. And what she picked out for me.

That’s such great advice! I have tried to follow trends in the past, and that didn’t work out for me either. B gave you good advice, I think it is important to be comfortable in what you are in. At least those are the times I feel the best about myself. Do you have a piece in your wardrobe you cannot live without?

I have a pair of flat black riding boots that go with everything – skinny jeans, flowing tops, dresses or skirts. And they are so comfortable. I should probably go online and buy a second pair because I’ll cry when they give out.

OH yes! Those are a must have accessory! A great pair of boots can make any outfit so much better!

So, getting a little serious here: It must have been hard to deny something that is such a big part of who you are for so many years. How do you think things would’ve been different had your dad trained you to use your magic instead of forcing you to keep it under control?

I wish there was an easy answer to give you here. I’d like to say it would have been amazing and I’d be so much better off, but the realities are that everything happens for a reason and truth comes at a price. There are things I know now that explain – let me be clear, they don’t justify – why things had to be the way they were. But, had I been given the opportunity to grow with my power instead of allow it to grow without me, I do think I wouldn’t be in the predicament I’m in now.

What a great perspective on your past! I bet it was hard to stand up for yourself and make such a huge decision like moving to Brighton. I am wondering what you felt in that moment?

In that moment, as my father hugged me for the first time in years after I told him I was leaving, I felt a lot of guilt. But it was also freeing. My life was going to be mine, or so I thought. It was clear to me, even then, that changes were happening inside me and that I would have no help explaining them if I didn’t leave. Had I not stood up for myself in that moment, there is so much of life I never would have experienced. Knowing I had my brother Cole there, so that I wouldn’t truly be alone, really made the difference though.

Cole is such a great brother to you, and I laughed so hard when I read your story about when you were a kid and you looked up and realized how big his nose is! It must have been a relief knowing you’d have him around for your big move, especially when you have been separated so long. What were you hoping the next three years were going to look like for you?

I had really hoped to find out who I was. So much of my childhood had been about hiding my true self and emotions. I needed space to see what I liked and didn’t, the kinds of people I would choose to bring into my life or not…even just what I might want to be when I grew up had I been given the choice (which is a marine biologist, in case you were curious). But I also knew that there was information about what I really was waiting for me. I didn’t realize it would change things as dramatically as it did, but I was searching for it anyway.

I am remembering that story you told Aiden about the horses in the clouds, does you find that reflects your life at all?

[Sigh] It does. I think it reflects on both of our lives more than we wanted to admit. I was kept cloistered away from everyone, even people supposedly like me, while they all learned and grew together. All I wanted was one person to stand up for me and knock down the fence so I could be like everyone else. But, I’ve also learned since then that sometimes you can’t wait for other people to do it for you. If I were to do it all again, the story would go that the lonely horse would go kick down the fence himself to get to the people he loved. But, sometimes you don’t get a do-over.

I can think of a few moments I’d love to have a do-over in…Goodness! Things got a little serious there for a bit. Why don’t we pull back some and go in another direction. I am curious about your interest in marine biology, do you have a specific aspect of marine biology you are interested in, or just the field in general?

I’ve always been drawn to the ocean. And to animals. When I was little I would sit on the cliffs and watch the dolphins jump in and out of the water. I’d walk the beach and sit back to watch turtles lumber around and then glide into the water. Once, I even untangled a baby seagull from a net. I’ve just always known that I wanted to work with animals tied to the sea.

Gosh that sounds so amazing, I have been to the ocean some and watching the dolphins is always such an amazing, almost otherworldly experience!

Well let’s wrap it up with one more question. I just have to mention the dreaminess that is Aiden…he is pretty tenacious, which I kind of admire in a person. What is your favorite physical characteristic of him? Favorite part of his personality?

His eyes are my favorite, but not for the reason you would expect. They are beautiful, all smoke and ash, but he sees me. I look at him as he looks at me and I know that he sees the real person hiding between layers of power and emotion and fear. And he accepts that. Even when I couldn’t actually tell him and he didn’t understand, he still accepted me for who I was at any given moment. And I love that he challenges me. That boy won’t let me off easy for a second, and that’s what I need.

OH.My.GOSH! Could that be any more romantic!?!? Goodnight I think my heart just melted *sigh* Well, on that note I want to thank you, again,  so much for joining me. Any last words of wisdom for my readers?

Don’t run from your life, because it will catch up to you. Instead, see who you can surround yourself with to build you up and get you ready to face it head on. You’ll see who your real friends are and you’ll get to know a side of yourself you only dreamed of.

Synopsis

Amelia grew up in a world of half-truths. She knows she’s an Elder, but has no idea what that means. Her father reminds her daily that she must maintain control, but he refuses to explain why. Even worse, she’s betrothed to the prince of the Immortals and doesn’t even know his name.

Finally breaking free to live a few normal years at a community college, the last thing Amelia expects is to find her best friend in a cheeky southern girl, or fall for a self-assured human who sees her for who she is, not what she will become.

As she learns more about herself, Amelia realizes the line between love and duty is a thin one. As her power continues to increase exponentially and her questions are slowly answered, Amelia must make the ultimate choice. The question is, will her head win the battle, or her heart?

Excerpt: Bound by Duty – Prologue

Her stark white hair fell down around her face. For the first time in one hundred years it wasn’t pulled back in a waist-length braid. Her crimson robes were torn and stained. She bit back a groan, her lips a tight line as the pain ripped through her once again. The invisible knife raked its way up her back as wounds no one could see flayed her skin and weakened her resolve. It had been days of this and she wasn’t sure if she could continue. As she looked up and met the queen’s eyes, Lavignia pushed the anger down and forced compassion to rise yet again.

“What is it you hope to learn, Julia? What is it you think you have to gain from all of this?” she asked weakly as she tugged on the restraints that kept her tethered to the heavy wooden chair. Her power was already weak when the Hunters had found her, and the enchanted chamber had dampened what remained to a tiny flame.

The room was dark, but the sun was slowly rising. An orange and pink glow filtered through the small window above Julia’s head. The colorful rays that should have resembled hope of a new day only shed light on the reality that Lavignia would never leave this room alive.

Julia stepped from the shadows and walked slowly toward Lavignia. She stopped and crouched down, putting herself at eye level.

“Oh, Livvy, dear. Don’t do that,” she said, her tone patronizing as her ice crystal eyes narrowed. “Don’t pretend you can still look down on me from your Elder tower. Don’t pretend you can utter your polite words and suddenly I’ll remember who you are versus who I am. I know exactly who I am. I am the one who rules them all. I am the one they will bow down to and worship. I am the Queen. Not you. Or your sisters. Your time is done.”

She looked back over her shoulder to the Hunter who stood in the still dark corner of the room and nodded. The Hunter’s eyes burned bright orange as Lavignia’s screams echoed off the walls. Julia raised her hand and the screams dropped to whimpers. With that same hand, she reached out and took Lavignia’s.

“Livvy, look at me,” she commanded. Dazed, dim violet eyes struggled to focus and find hers. Julia tightened her grip, digging her scarlet nails into Lavignia’s already tender flesh, making her yelp and their eyes connect.

“Livvy, you need to tell me,” she said. “I know you see it. You knew this day would come and you know I won’t stop until you tell me. I scoured the lands for you. I know there are others left, but they can be saved. You can save them, old friend. You just have to tell me.” Her tone was persuasive and gentle, but the frantic look that passed through her eyes told Lavignia the truth the queen couldn’t hide — she was scared.

“You won’t harm the others? You will let them live out their lives hidden and free? You will swear an oath?” Her words trailed off and Lavignia’s eyes closed, the torture of the last few days taking its toll. She could only hope the oath would keep her people safe.

She didn’t see the triumph that straightened Julia’s posture or the sneer that twisted her thin, painted lips. “Of course, my dear. I swear to you that I will not seek out and harm the remaining Elders. I swear that I will not take their freedom.”

“Your blood,” Lavigniasaid, her words barely audible.

Julia removed a small dirk from the folds of her skirts and repeated the words as she slid the blade down her palm. As the deep red drop hit the floor, she sent a small wave of power through to heal the wound, reveling in the knowledge that she had won.

“Now, Livvy, darling, you must tell me.” When Lavignia didn’t respond, Julia whipped back around to the still silent Hunter. “Help her. Give her what she needs. NOW!” she commanded, panic finally breaking through her controlled facade.

The Hunter flicked a wrist at Lavignia and she suddenly straightened, her eyes luminescent and shining at the welcome invasion of power that flooded her system, giving her renewed life for a few precious seconds.

With sudden clarity, she saw the future that had eluded her. She looked down on Julia with authority and pity as the words that would cement the queen’s fate fell from her lips.

“You will have your time, but it will end. She will be born to the one who got away. Inside her, the five families will merge and only a man who is both king and companion will tame the wild and set her free. She will be your undoing. She will lead them all.”

Julia reared back, Lavignia’s words not the ones she expected. Seconds later, her dirk was buried deep in Lavignia’s chest. Lavignia collapsed back against the chair, a content smile mocking the queen from her lifeless face.

Julia’s breath heaved in and out in short bursts as she turned to the Hunter. “I made an oath. You did not. Find them. Kill them all.”

Choose Us

Picture

So this book….THIS BOOK!!!!!! So far you have only seen paranormal type book reviews on here, and that is most of what I read.

HOWEVER, Choose Us is JUST SO GOOD!

Caylie Marcoe is a Rebel Writer, and  Choose Us is her debut novel, and she knocked it out of the park!

Take two best friends (Riley and Travis), add in some BMX, a reality show, and you have an amazing read!

It is just the sweetest love story. Sometimes I get tired of love triangles, and magic, and shapeshifting, and all those complex things and crave something I can relax and enjoy. Caylie delivers this and more in this book.

Travis and Riley have been best friends for years, and she has never put up with his crap. As his personal assistant she has seen him go through countless women during his career as a BMX rider, and has now been roped into being one of the contestants on a Bachelor type reality show. Riley’s job will be to get an inside look at these girls and give Travis advice on who to keep, and who to get rid of. Should be easy right? They are only friends? HA! Well, if you thought that you’d be dead wrong!

Like he’s REALLY going to listen to his best friend when she tells him Miss Giggle Boobs (HA!) is a superficial girl who is SO not right for him!

Of COURSE he’s going to keep her around as long as possible

*shakes head*

Travis this is NOT how you get the girl!

Travis is in love with Riley, and I suspect has known for awhile, poor Riley is just so clueless.

So she agrees to this crazy scheme and finds herself in a house full of girls she has nothing in common with…

and one she absolutely loathes (Miss Giggle Boobs, anyone?)

Of course when she encouraged Travis to get rid of this girl, he completely ignores the advice…typical.

By the time she realizes she is in love with him, and they both agree to keep their relationship a secret things go way WAY downhill, as you just KNEW they would!

I mean come ON, you can NEVER keep that kind of secret!

It’ll always bite you in the butt, especially this kind of secret. I was literally yelling at them to stop being stupid and just go public, but they just refused to listen
