A Reaper Made

ReaperCoversm

Kindle I Nook I iBooks

Reapers, afterlife…death…afterlife…reapers
Truthfully, I avoid books that have to do with this stuff. I tried to watch “Dead Like Me” once, and I just couldn’t get too into it.
However, I have read Liz Long’s books (and reviewed them here) in the past, and have enjoyed her writing, so I thought, “Why not?”
I am SO glad I did!
Grace is snarky and irreverent, and I love it!
She was killed by a drunk driver and given the chance to become a reaper, and since she loved helping people while she was alive, she wanted to help them when they were ready to pass on as well.
So, she is now a “Made”, mentored by Tully, another “Made”
Made, as in they are not one of the original reapers created from fallen angels.
Poor Grace can’t catch a break from Tully, she is just too human. She is snarky and emotional, rather than the neutral Reaper she is supposed to be.
She is hanging out with her friend Tessa, who is a 300 year old witch, and they are talking about how boring life has become…
Well, Tessa is anyway, poor girls been a live for-EVER, warts and all, though she glamours herself up to be the beautiful person on the outside that she is on the inside.
So Tessa is bored, and when people are bored things happen…at least in books they happen.
Right?
If you are ever in a movie or book ,DO NOT COMPLAIN, because all hell WILL break loose!
And it does…all I will say now is that the rest of the book involves:
Grace’s living family
A hunky shifter that has a thing for feisty Tessa, and a bad angel gone worse, an Oracle with a Jersey accent, a temporary love interest for Grace, a confused halfling, a giant demon, and…
oh yeah…Grace’s living family.
Dun dun dun…..
Read it and review it!

The essence of who we are lies not in what we have, but in what we are willing to give up. Because in the end, Time and Tide wait for no one.

After sacrificing all that she had, the evil princess of the Underworld is still successful in her bid to tear Finn from Stasia’s life. In the midst of her search to reclaim him, Stasia is summoned to the island nation of Cyprus to take part in an age-old ritual; unveiling the missing pieces of her ancestry and re-igniting an ancient war. As she struggles to both save Finn’s soul and free
Carmen’s mind, Stasia’s bravery and determination will be pushed to its breaking point. A dark storm is forming on the horizon, and the forces who are vying to destroy her may be much closer than she thinks. Destiny weaves a sticky web of evil, betrayal, and revenge that can only be undone by the purity of love and the soul’s unyielding will to survive. In the last installment of the Daughters of the Sea trilogy, the past will collide with the present as Stasia’s future hangs in the balance. The prophecy that paved the way for her new life may indeed be the very thing that strips her of the ones she loves the most.

Once you’ve
been touched by darkness, it never leaves you…

Abandoned by
her parents as an infant; seventeen year old Hannah spent her childhood wading through countless foster families until being adopted by the Whitmans three years ago. Unfortunately, Atlanta’s high society wasn’t quite ready for Hannah…or the strange events that plague her

Chilling visions of murder, unexplained hallucinations, and a dark, mysterious guy who haunts her nightmares all culminate to set in motion a journey of self-discovery that will challenge everything she’s ever believed; not to mention her sanity.

Sent to live
at The House of Lorelei on Bald Head Island, NC for ‘kids like her’, Hannah quickly realizes things are not what they seem. Her fellow ‘disturbed’ teens are actually the descendants of mythical Sea Gods and Goddesses. And so is she.

But when Finn, the ghost from her dreams, appears in the flesh; her nightmares become reality and her dark visions begin coming true. Inexplicably drawn to him, she can’t deny the dangerous hold he has on her heart. The deadly secrets he harbors will ultimately test her courage and push the boundaries of her love.

She must decide if she is ready to embrace the ancient legend she is prophesized to be a part of. The fate of all the descendants will forever depend upon it.

I am a southern belle at heart with a crazy streak that desperately tries
to escape at every opportunity. I love all things nostalgic, rustic, and quirky. I’ve
been told I see the world through rose-colored glasses, but I prefer to think of them
as kaleidoscope glasses – swirling and morphing reality into something I can digest
(who hasn’t pretended those pasty lima beans were really kiwi strawberry jelly
beans?).

When I’m not writing I’m making jewelry,
painting, drinking sweet tea,
watching the discovery channel, or going on random
adventures in the mountains of
North Carolina with my amazing husband.

Fallen

“Life is but a flash…and so many men waste it”

A while ago I reviewed a book called Moonlight, by Ann Hunter. The villain in the book, Sylas Mortas has a sad sad tale that is told in this book,  Fallen.

One of the things I like about Ann Hunter’s books is her ability to bring a world to life. Her use of descriptive imagery is just about perfect.
Many times I’ll read a book and it has WAY too much description and I find myself skipping whole paragraphs, or is has very little description and comes across as bland.
Ann Hunter’s words do not come across that way, I feel like her writing is very balanced in that sense.
So, Sylas is a prince and the main character of this story.
While his family see’s him as foolish, I find him brave.
At the beginning he runs away to escape being controlled, only to be kidnapped and then he CHOSE to stay there and go on an adventure.
Then a ban sidhe (banshee) visits his grandfather, and he takes his grandfather’s place instead.
There is something about these things that make me believe he is not only brave, but loyal as well.
At least to his family anyway.
Laittie..not so much.
Or so it seems…
Another character, Ros, is in this book as well. She is an interesting, and out of the box kind of character.
She is a hen.
Yep..
like the laying eggs kind of hen.
Apparently she see’s aura’s, and her Farmer has taken her to the castle as a gift.

These two story lines weave in and out to create a complex and intriguing story that reminds me of the classic fairytale books I have read.  This fractured fairytale is based on the story of the Frog Prince, but oh so grown up and much darker than the story I heard as a kid

Then again, the original stories are much darker than I heard as a kid!

Have you ever read the originals?

Not so great.

Lush, Hush, & Crush

Does anyone here like the Selection series? Or Hunger Games?
No one, huh?
Just kidding…
I love them, and if you liked them, you LOVE the Lush series!

The other day I got a $20 Amazon Gift card and as hard as I tried to avoid buying $20 worth of books, I did.

My husband predicted it, and I denied it.

But.

I

Did.

I don’t regret one purchase either. The last two books int he Lush series, “Hush” and “Crush” were just two of the many books I bought and they did NOT disappoint!

AND!!!

AND!!!!
You can buy the whole trilogy for $5.29, right HERE

What are you waiting for!?!?! GO get it 🙂

Alright, so let’s get into the gritty details…

well, not so gritty.

First, let’s talk about the names. The names of Bluebelle (the main character) and all her girl friends are floral, so her friends are Lily, Petals, Petunia, Holly, and Rosebud….

I’d feel bad for them, except that is the norm in their compound? Country? Place of residence…I don’t know. The guys are all named after nature things like Ash, Stream, Thorn, Blade, Leaf, etc.

I think it is a fun idea, and if you cannot get creative as an author,

What is the point!?!?

Consequently, the names of most, if not all of their parents are fallen cities like Denver, Jackson, Aspen, etc.

I love it.

Little details like these make me happy as a reader.

Moving on.

So, from age 5 until about 17 the girls and boys are separated from each other (even brothers and sisters), and their parents. Parents can visit them on Sundays.

At 17 they can incorporate, which means the guys and girls begin training for their careers. They can also enter into marriage contracts, and find out what brand they are going to get.

Will they be Infertile or Fertile? If you are wealthy it isn’t too big of a deal, but if not, you may as well just give up on life now.

Maybe that is harsh.

Only, Bluebelle is NEITHER! She is LUSH!

Lush with life, which means she can have a ton of children rather than just one.

This couldn’t have happened to a better citizen. She is well behaved, daughter of one of the Council, granddaughter to another of the Council, and doesn’t question a thing.

She is the perfect ambassador to keep Concord’s citizens compliant.

Until…

She begins reading a mysterious story that explains some dreams

and she gets a top secret tablet that has her questioning all she has ever known.

Everything.

This series is GREAT! Go get it and review them on Amazon and Goodreads!
